Decades Later, Forville in Cannes is Still a Top Choice Market for Chefs at La Pitchoune

One of Julia Child’s most notable haunts during her days in the French countryside was the storied Marche Forville in Cannes. The intuitive chef would shop for top-notch produce along the aisles of the market, no doubt perusing the views as much as the tomatoes! Luckily for us, the market is still absolutely brimming with culture, art, and delectable food, and it’s a short 30-minute jaunt from the La Pitchoune property!

At the bottom of Le Suquet - the old Roman settlement directly above Cannes - sits the Marche Forville, an expansive, covered market that serves the region well. In fact, it serves the region so well that it is known as one of the most popular markets in the Riviera. We like to head to Forville specifically when we are running low on an assortment of oils, herbs, or cheeses. Seasonal varieties make it almost impossible to stay away as well!

There’s a parking garage adjacent to the market. There’s an assortment of local produce, tapenades, cheeses, flowers, along with some prepared foods. In 2020, when most restaurants were closed, it was one of the few spots we could purchase prepared food. There’s also a spot reserved exclusively for local fishermen. The covered market area is close to La Croisette, the fabled walk lined with shops and restaurants.

Known for its droves of fresh, local produce and an access point to acquire fish from around the world, the market has expanded its selling opportunity. Twenty years ago, deli meats appeared on the scene and in 2012, the market was pedestrianized. As many markets do in the country, this shopping area is converted into a flea market on Mondays. It can be a real treat to pop in to view the wares of the locals, especially in such a posh area!

Known, of course, for its annual festivals, the city of Cannes boasts one of the most epic views of the Mediterranean, an endless parade of Hollywood attention, and a feeling of known stature as you walk the streets.

Located nearby, the La Croisette boardwalk is absolutely delightful, and a great option to continue your exploration for the day. In the off-season, it’s easiest to get a glimpse at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival takes place annually. (And where any fancy shop or designer you can think of - Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. - has a storefront.)
